Nick Babich on UX
Nick Babich is the user experience (UX) specialist behind UX Planet - that very popular hub of all things UX on Medium. He also works as an Automation Lead as computer software company, RingCentral.
Q. What does your current role actually involve?
My day usually starts with checking emails. I read the feedback on my work (it could be a design, documentation, or an article) and introduce all required changes to the mocks or drafts. Next, I start designing. I usually work on lo-fi mock-ups that I send to the visual and motion design teams. So my goal is to design them accordingly to the product requirements.
Usually, I’ll spend a lot of time interacting with stakeholders, designers, and developers to ensure that everything is going smoothly.
Q. What got you interested in the subject of user experience?
The field is extremely interesting to me because of the opportunities it provides. You can wear many different hats (especially when you're working with a small or mid-size team), so it's always easy to find what works best for you.
Also, you see the result of your work - and this is a strong motivator to me. When you see when people use your design, it really motivates you to create great experiences.
Q. Why did you start UX Planet?
When I started UX Planet back in 2015, my idea was to create a platform that shares the best information about design, product development, and design tools with people who just started in the field of UX design.
Also, I wanted to create a community of fellow designers who want to share their opinions with their peers. Even today, UX Planet is open for a contribution so everyone can share their ideas with our community.
Q. What do you see happening with UX in 2020?
I think that we will be more focused on creating products that respect user privacy. Also, I think that the way we interact with devices will start to switch from graphical user interface (GUI) only to GUI + voice interactions. I also think that designers will strive to create more accessible solutions.
Q. Lastly, what advice would you give to someone who’s about to start their first UX role?
Don't be afraid to make mistakes.
Your first role is an opportunity to find what you like about UX the most, so use this opportunity and experiment and try various things. Get hands-on experience with tools, technologies, design practices because it will help you to learn and grow faster.
